Who are we? Where do we work? What materials do we use? Do we use fair trade? What recommendations do we have with plant fibers? Do we make special orders? Below we clarify all your doubts.

All our pieces are handmade by artisans from different communities, who work with different plant fibers. Whether palm leaf, henequen, wicker or popotillo, all of them have an enormous and valuable cultural heritage of many generations, thank you for supporting us in maintaining them!

Our history

Petate is a company that has been designing jewelry and products since 2016.
focused on working together with artisans from all over Mexico, the beautiful cultural legacy that plant fiber weaving has.

Our main purpose is to revalue the culture of manual weaving of endless fibers. With the incentive of generating long-term jobs, maintaining traditions, using sustainable materials and generating products according to the contemporary market.

Who are we?

My name is Mariana Águila, I am an industrial designer graduated from the university Centro de Diseño, Cine y Televisión and a master in Industrial Design at the UNAM Postgraduate Program.

I fell in love with the artisan knowledge that I discovered during a project made in college, it was the palm leaf weaving that is made in the indigenous community of Tlamacazapa, in the state of Guerrero. Since then I have not been able to get away from the beauty of our country's natural fibers and the communities that use them.

Where do we work? What fibers are used?

Here we give you more information about the artisans we work with and what fibers are used.

Our offices are located in CDMX, but the artisans are located in:

-Tequisquiapan, Querétaro

-San Luis Amatlán, Oaxaca

-Tlamacazapa, Guerrero

-Los Reyes La Paz, State of Mexico

-Xocchel, Yucatan

-Becal, Campeche

-Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán

We mainly use wicker in most of the pieces, which is made in Tequisquiapan. We also use many palm leaves which are used in different communities such as Tlamacazapa, Bécal and San Luis Amatlán. Additionally, we use popotillo which is obtained from different places around Los Reyes La Paz and Tzintzuntzan. Finally we use henequen that is obtained and woven in Xocchel.

No, from the price you see for each of the products we give a third part to each artisan who creates them. The other two thirds are destined: 1) to company expenses and 2) to our profit. But our purpose is to maintain the work and knowledge of the artisans so their profit is the same as ours, which for us is fair trade.

All pieces of our jewelry are 18k gold plated.

We recommend for all pieces of jewelry and decoration:

1)Avoid contact with water as it accelerates rot. (Do not put them in the pool, shower or in the rain)

2)Decorative objects are recommended for indoor use. Sunlight also accelerates its color change.

3)Jewelry made with plant fibers can break easily, we recommend that you avoid storing it with products that could damage or break it.

Yes, we can make personalized jewelry pieces in size and color. We can also make decoration products to any desired size or color. You can send us a message or email.
